Continuing the informal in situ institutes we have had in the spring and summer, we will be hosting a morning at Lynn Canyon Park on Saturday, November 18th from 10am - noon. Lauren MacLean and I will be facilitating a morning of math experiences along the creek and canyon amidst the temperate rainforest. Please bring a notebook or sketchbook with you and dress for the weather. Some of the boardwalks and rocks are very slippery right now with leaves and moss (and rain/snow) so please wear appropriate and safe footwear.
We will meet near the Ecology Centre at 10am. There is free parking right when you turn into the park entrance and also further past the Ecology Centre (follow the signs). The Ecology Centre is open on Saturdays during the fall/winter from 12-4pm and you might want to visit it after our time together to see some interesting displays about local flora and fauna.
There is no cost or registration necessary - just meet us there! Our goal is to notice and wonder how this place inspires our mathematical thinking and to consider ways to engage students in mathematical learning experiences outdoors.
We will begin on the westside of Lynn Creek, moving north along the Baden-Powell trail, engaging in different guided math experiences and brainstorming ideas together. We will get close to the Thirty Foot Pool and then loop back. If everyone is willing, we will then cross over the short suspension bridge and follow the trail to the Twin Falls Bridge. There are other trail options as well.
A map of the trails can be found HERE
There is the Lynn Canyon Cafe near the parking lot for those who would like to continue the conversation over lunch.

Hi,
My name is Andrew. I'm running behind but am heading over. In case I don't see you at the Ecology Center, I'll try to catch up with you on the trail.
See you soon, hopefully!
