I printed the photographs the students took of shapes they saw outside of the school and I had the students work in partners to look for the math in the photographs, beyond identifying the 2D and 3D shapes in the photos. As we come to the end of the year, I hoped that the students' understanding of what mathematics is has broadened.
I listened in as students discussed what they noticed...I heard discussions about perimeter, circumference, estimation, arrays and measurement concepts.
I'm hoping there's time next week to get outside and investigate some of their ideas!
