I do a little math review every month to check in on how students are doing, usually with number concepts and operations. This month it looked like this:
We also did some review together on different subtraction strategies. We did one together with students suggesting different strategies and I recorded them on a chart. The students then needed to use all 6 strategies to solve two subtraction equations.

I have also been giving the students some CGI-based problems to practice number operations in context and for students to show the different approaches they have for solving the problems.

Number concepts and strategies for operations need ongoing exposure and time for practice over the school year and I find these little reviews worthwhile for the students and for me for assessment purposes.
This month I also did an end of year diagnostic assessment (WNCP/developed by Vancouver Island teachers) that addresses all areas of the grade 3 curriculum. There were 25 multiple choice questions that assess understanding of concepts and application of mathematical skills. There were also two problems that students solved and showed how they solved them and then 16 equations to solve. I did this at the beginning of the year (using the end of grade/beginning of grade 3 diagnostic) and found it very useful to see where the students were when we started this year. Doing the diagnostic at the end of the year highlighted a few concepts and skills we could focus on for the last few weeks of school, provided information for resource support for next year and class placements. Overall, worth the couple of blocks the students spent (most just took about 45 minutes) working on the assessment.
