I brought in a collection of things I bought at our local farmers' market on the weekend and we looked to some information books to confirm what part of the plants some of the things were. For example, the potato is actually the stem of the potato plant. We talked about how different a potato was compared to a piece of rhubarb which is also a stem! We had samples of roots, stems, leaves, fruit and seeds as well as some honey made from local cranberry and blackberry bushes!
The students were great about trying the different fruits and vegetables. They recorded what the fruit or vegetable looked like, what part of the plant it was and then the students recorded their observations or tasting results in different ways - charts, scores, descriptive words.
The honey was very popular. It was kind of neat that we had learned all about cranberries in the fall and here we are in the summer enjoying cranberry honey! One special guy who had never tried honey before was quite animated when he tried it and exclaimed delicious!
