As a quick spring growing experiment, we planted wheat grass. What I love about wheat grass is how fast it grows and I wanted the students to get excited about some of the growing plans we have for the spring.
We planted the seeds last Wednesday afternoon and by Thursday (8 days) this is what they looked like!
The students observed, compared, measured and wondered.
The students were fascinated by the roots!
And then the students made wheat grass characters!
They were excited to take them home for the Easter weekend and give them haircuts. I think the best wonder question the students had is how come the grass keeps growing if you cut it? The students know that other grasses are like that but many plants don't continue to grow if they are cut. It will definitely be something we will further investigate during our gardening experiences this spring.
