On Tuesday, as students were pulling their inquiry projects together, we worked on a couple of large canvases. A group of students had painted them black before school.
For the Moon canvas, we used an image of the moon we had found during our study of the moon and enlarged it on the photocopier. The students found letters and words from some magazines in the classroom and cut them out. They then worked together to create a sort of free verse poem to go with our moon image.
For the second canvas, I showed the students some of Kandinsky's abstract paintings and many of the students recognized his work. They hadn't seen Several Circles though and I asked them what it reminded them of and they said space! I told them that's what I thought when I saw it too and that it made me think about exoplanets.
Each student cut out a circle from construction paper or tissue paper and a group of students lay them out on the canvas before adhering them.
