Our investigations about mushrooms continue. I never planned for this to happen but the students and I are learning so much! When they came to the library on Monday, I read them some exerpts from some informational books and had them raise their hands every time they learned something "new". There were a lot of hands raised and I told them we should write a book about mushrooms since there wasn't one in our library! The students have told me they have been continuing their mushroom hunting at recess and lunch and with their families.
Today I brought in some shitake and portabella mushrooms that I had bought at the grocery store and each table group got a plateful to observe. I gave each child a small skewer to probe and turn over the mushrooms. Eventually, they also used the skewers to tear off little pieces of mushroom to try eating.
I wanted the children to feel "safe" with the mushrooms which is why I chose grocery store ones. We were able to see very different types of gills and different parts of the mushrooms.
