This week we checked in our bulbs to see how they were growing. The roots on the hyacinth bulbs are getting so long and the amaryllis leaves are starting to come out!
After doing some observations on the bulbs' appearances and growth, I asked the students to choose one of the flowering bulb plants to record some observations about, including what they knew about the life cycle of the plant. I told them they would also be choosing one of the plants we had observed outside to do the same thing. Most of the students chose one of "our" trees. We discussed what features make up appearance - colour, shape, texture, size, details, etc. After recording details about the two plants, I asked the students to consider how the plants were the same and how they were different.
I think when we grow some plants from seed in the spring, we'll try a task like this again.
