After I went apple picking with my family out at the Apple Barn in Abbotsford, I brought in some of the apples we picked to share with the class. I made sure to keep a few that had leaves still attached.
The students were asked to observe and record the apples in three different ways: as a scientist, as an artist and as a poet. Some students created very detailed drawings while others focused on recording descriptive words.
After observing the outside of the apples, I cut some vertically and some horizontally and had students notice and describe how they were the same and how they were different. We had a labelled diagram of the different parts of an apple available to the students for vocabulary.
The students also tasted a bit of the apples and were asked to think about smell, taste and texture and record these "findings" as well. The students' notebooks were full of detail (and some apple peel taped in!).
After the cranberry fest in the class, the students are already asking what we'll be making with apples - their suggestions have been applesauce, apple muffins and apple crisp!
