So every summer I have a long list of new places I want to go, new things I want to try and things I want to learn how to do. This summer's list was long as per usual and not much got checked off. I can live with that. Next year will be the summer of fun!
I was determined though to learn how to make cheese this summer. I have been curious about it for years and this June when I was at Vancouver's Maker Faire, I bought a kit from makecheese.ca, determined to make it happen. Well, this summer slipped away on me but I gave it one go the Friday night before we left for Oregon. DISASTER. Epic fail.
The first attempt was a bit thrown together. I probably didn't read through the instructions as carefully as I should have. Afterwards, I noticed this:
I remember reading that and thinking, "how finicky can rennet be?". Well, apparently quite finicky!
So it is the labour day weekend and I wanted to conquer this cheese thing. I pulled out my digital thermometer to be all exact and scientific, kept track of my timing more carefully, and had fun with kitchen chemistry.
And who knew that this Saturday was International Cheese Pizza Day? Huh. So it had to happen.
The mozza was made. Cheese-making can get checked off the list. I love learning something new.
