Adam has been in the Spectrum program at his high school for the last three years. The students have their core academic subjects together and complete an ENEX (enrichment experience) each year as well as do special trips. The students become very very close and this was very evident at their program gala earlier this month.
Each student had to prepare a speech and talk about what they have learned about themselves in the program and what was meaningful and memorable. Adam was the last speaker and told us he was going to "wing it" which made us a little nervous. Every other student had a speech, song or poem written out and stood at the podium reading into the microphone. Adam clearly had thought this through in his head though and he impressed us with his confidence, ability to work the crowd and the connections he made during his speech. His song that introduced him was the song playing on a roller coaster ride from their trip to Orlando and he wove this idea throughout his speech...that although he loves rollercoasters, they are sometimes a bit scary, kind of like Spectrum
Spectrum has pushed Adam out of his comfort zone at times, but in a safe, supportive environment. We can't say enough good things about the group of students he has worked with for three years - they all support and push each other in a such a positive way. We are thankful too for the teachers in the program who have provided alternative and enrichment experiences for the program.
