The evenings are getting cooler and the garden's season is drawing to a close. I could be planting fall vegetables now but I am realistic and know that once school starts, I have very little time to get out in the backyard. The herbs are making a comeback with the cooler weather and the spearmint smells so good when I walk out the back door. The quince tree looks like it still has a few weeks to go before picking and the everbearing strawberries are truly everbearing...I find a few ready ones every time I go check on them! The black cherry tomatoes aren't ripening and I'm worried it might be too late for them unless we get a burst of heat in September.
Love, love, love all the different hydrangeas I have in the yard. The boys' hanging baskets are making a comeback in the cooler weather too. Lovely to look out the kitchen window and see them!
With the cooler weather we are seeing less butterflies, dragonflies and ladybugs around but the spiders and slugs are making themselves at home in the garden.
I picked some little baby orange and purple carrots today.
I've snuck a few little nugget-size purple potatoes out of the tubs to throw in with dinner but today I "harvested" our first big tub of purple potatoes.
And the blackberries from the path beside our house are creeping over our fence!
Lots of purple goodness in the garden at the end of the summer!
