Our first trip to the big island of Hawai'i was amazing and we all agreed we'd love to go back again. We all had our particular favourites from the trip...
Neil: the hike to Green Sands beach, ocean kayaking, visiting the volcano
Janice: the beaches, snorkeling, walking across the Kilauea lava lake, watching the boys boogie board, enjoying the ocean views and sunsets, learning about the history and plants of the island
Adam: boogieboarding, surfing and all the hiking, seeing the dolphins and sea turtles
Colin: surfing, paddleboarding, boogieboarding, snorkeling and seeing the dolphins
When I think about highlights from traveling, the things we remember are the places we go, the things we do, the natural world we encounter, the things we learn and the treats and eating out that we enjoy.
Places we loved being: in the ocean, on the beach (all of them), at Kilauea volcano, hiking in the rainforest, poolside, in the hammocks at the resort
Places we didn't love so much: injury causing locations such as black sea-urchin encrusted rocks and the rocks at the surfing beach
Food we loved eating: fresh pineapple and melon with breakfast every morning, pancakes with coconut syrup, Hawaiian bbq chicken, beef and pork from LnL, grilled local fish and pineapple coleslaw on the verandah, strawberry mango fruit smoothies, shave ice, tropical drinks
Food we didn't love so much: most of the "touristy" restaurants...bland reheated/prepared food
Animals we didn't love so much: black sea urchins
Nothing can compare to having focused, relaxed time with your family to reconnect and just enjoy being together. Some of my favourite moments from the trip were just those...moments. The moments when I would glance over and see Neil and Colin giggling away on the hammock or when I would watch Colin and Adam in deep conversation about something as they walked along the rocks or jumped the waves or when I would be poolside and just close my eyes for a moment and enjoy the pure joy of it all.
